H.E. Mene is the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat and the first person to hold the position since its establishment in 2020. A seasoned South African trade diplomat, he leads H.E. Wamkele Mene is the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat and the first person to hold the position since its establishment in 2020. A seasoned South African trade diplomat, he leads the implementation of the AfCFTA, one of the world’s most ambitious trade agreements, focused on boosting intra-African trade, industrialization, and economic integration. Born in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape Province, Mr. Mene earned a B.A. in Law from Rhodes University, an M.A. in International Studies and Diplomacy from SOAS, University of London, and an LL.M. in Banking Law and Financial Regulation from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Before assuming his current role, he served as South Africa’s Head of Mission to the World Trade Organization, Chair of the WTO Committee on International Trade in Financial Services, and Chief Director for Africa Economic Relations at the Department of Trade and Industry, where he was also South Africa’s Chief Negotiator in the AfCFTA negotiations. Mr. Mene’s leadership continues to drive the AfCFTA’ s vision of a unified African market that fosters sustainable growth, job creation, and shared prosperity across the continent.
