Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas

Chairman ETLS Task Force

Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas is the Chairman of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) Task Force, providing strategic leadership to advance regional economic integration and free trade across West Africa. A distinguished Ghanaian diplomat, lawyer, and political scientist, he has held several prominent international and national roles, including Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) and President of the ECOWAS Commission. Dr. Chambas earned degrees in Political Science from the University of Ghana and Cornell University, where he also obtained his Ph.D. He holds a law degree from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio and is admitted to practice in both Ghana and the United States. A seasoned statesman and peacebuilder, Dr. Chambas previously served as Member of Parliament, First Deputy Speaker, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in Ghana. Internationally, he played key mediation roles in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia, contributing to peace and democratic transitions across West Africa. Through his leadership at the ETLS Task Force, Dr. Chambas continues to champion economic cooperation, private sector growth, and sustainable regional integration for the prosperity of West African nations.
